Climate Change Bulletin: Updates on Key Events of 2024

03 tháng 7, 2026

Climate change is becoming one of the greatest challenges humanity faces in the 21st century. From extreme weather events to the rise in greenhouse gases, climate change affects not only the environment but also has a profound impact on the economy and society. In this article, we provide the latest information on events, research, and policies related to climate change in Vietnam and around the world.

The State of Climate Change Around the World

Climate change is occurring intensely on a global scale, and one of the main factors driving this phenomenon is the increase in CO2 emissions. Recent reports show that, despite numerous efforts to reduce emissions, the situation has yet to improve.

The Rise in CO2 Emissions

According to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) in July 2024, global CO2 emissions rose by 1.5% in the first half of 2024. This shows that global efforts to reduce emissions are still not enough to halt the rise in the Earth's temperature. Without urgent action, the risk of exceeding the 1.5°C threshold will become a reality.

The COP29 Conference

The COP29 conference, held in November 2024, will focus on strengthening emission-reduction commitments and discussing solutions for adapting to climate change. It will be an important opportunity for countries to reach consensus and make more binding decisions in the fight against climate change.

Research on Ice Melt

A study published in June 2024 indicates that ice in Greenland is melting faster than predicted, potentially contributing to a sea-level rise of up to 1 meter by the end of this century. This would have serious impacts on coastal cities worldwide.

The State of Climate Change in Vietnam

Climate change is having a profound impact on many sectors in Vietnam, from agriculture to food security. To address this challenge, the government has set out numerous important policies aimed at mitigating the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate Change Policy

Vietnam is striving to implement its National Strategy on Climate Change, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels. According to figures from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam reduced emissions by 15% in 2022, but many more measures are still needed to achieve the set target.

Natural Disasters and Extreme Weather

In August 2024, many provinces in central and northern Vietnam faced heavy rains and severe flooding. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, rainfall reached a record 400mm within 24 hours in some areas. Experts believe that extreme weather events will increase, affecting agricultural production and food security, with estimated damage reaching up to USD 1.2 million per flood.

In September 2024, Typhoon Yagi, a powerful storm that struck Southeast Asia, caused severe damage in Vietnam. More than 200 people died and hundreds were injured, while many areas faced situations of people going missing. Transportation infrastructure was seriously damaged, with estimated losses reaching billions of dollars, along with 300,000 hectares of agricultural land inundated, affecting food security. This underscores the need to prepare for and respond to the extreme weather events that are increasing due to climate change.

Renewable Energy

Vietnam has been implementing international agreements to boost investment in renewable energy. The goal is to increase the share of renewable energy to 30% of total power capacity by 2030. According to a report from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in 2023 the share of renewable energy reached about 25%, with hundreds of wind and solar power projects being deployed.

Forest Protection

Efforts to protect forests have also been stepped up with reforestation programs and the restoration of natural ecosystems. Vietnam has committed to zero deforestation by 2030, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity. According to figures from the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, Vietnam planted more than 1 billion trees in 2023.

Education and Raising Awareness

Communication and education programs on climate change are being widely implemented in schools and communities. The goal is to raise awareness of climate change and encourage action to protect the environment. More than 2 million students and teachers participated in environmental education activities over the past year.

Climate change is a global issue, and not only Vietnam but all countries need to act urgently. With the latest information on events, research, and policies related to climate change, we can clearly see the urgency of the current situation. International cooperation, investment in green technology, and raising community awareness are the key factors in addressing climate change. Let us act together for a sustainable future and protect the planet for generations to come.
