At the COP26 Conference in 2021, Vietnam committed to achieving the goal of net zero emissions (Net Zero) by 2050, opening a new era in the fight against climate change. Along with this, national strategies such as the “Green Growth Action Plan 2021–2030” and the “National Strategy on Green Growth” have set clear targets, such as reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity and promoting the greening of economic sectors.

For manufacturing businesses, especially those exporting to demanding markets such as North America, Germany, and South Korea, complying with international environmental standards such as the Carbon Border is mandatory. Without thorough preparation, businesses will face the risk of being excluded from the global supply chain.

VISSAN: A clear and decisive emissions-reduction roadmap

At the workshop themed “Sharing experiences in building a greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy,” Mr. Truong Hai Hung, Deputy General Director of VISSAN, affirmed:

The four basic steps VISSAN applies to build a green production chain include:

1. Measurement and analysis: Using scientific tools to assess the current emissions status and classify direct and indirect emission sources.
2. Action planning: Developing specific solutions to reduce emissions based on the collected data.
3. Monitoring and improvement: Continuously updating and adjusting the plan to optimize effectiveness.
4. Synchronized implementation: Ensuring that every stage in the production chain strictly follows the emissions-reduction roadmap.

Applying green technology: From production to consumption

At VISSAN, technology is the key to achieving green goals. The company has invested heavily in renewable energy systems such as solar power and rice-husk-fired boilers. These initiatives not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also reduce dependence on fossil energy.

In parallel with optimizing production processes, VISSAN also makes small changes that carry great significance. VISSAN's stores have switched to using biodegradable nylon bags and environmentally friendly paper food trays. In its products, VISSAN develops lines of food that are good for health and close to nature, minimizing harmful additives, such as herbal pork, VietGAP pork, shrimp and crab spring rolls, and green-pepper beef rolls.

“Investing in green technology is a long journey, requiring persistent commitment and large amounts of capital. But this is the only path to ensure sustainable development in the long term,” shared Mr. Nguyen Ngoc An, General Director of VISSAN.

Modern and sustainable waste treatment process

Waste management is one of the biggest challenges for manufacturing businesses. At VISSAN, every stage in the supply chain from farm to factory is designed to minimize environmental impact.

In livestock farming, VISSAN applies closed-barn technology with cooling systems, automatic feed supply, and biogas wastewater treatment, meeting VietGAP standards. The production plant is equipped with a modern wastewater treatment system that continuously transmits monitoring data to the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Natural Resources and Environment Monitoring to oversee quality.

These synchronized measures have helped VISSAN not only reduce emissions but also increase economic efficiency, affirming its pioneering role in Vietnam's food industry.

Positive impacts and lessons from the green strategy

Unity from the leadership team to all employees is the key factor for VISSAN to achieve its sustainable development goals. Despite facing many difficulties, the company has proven that a clear roadmap combined with high determination will bring positive results.

In 2023, VISSAN's revenue reached more than 1,500 billion VND, with net profit of nearly 56 billion VND – evidence of the effectiveness of its sustainable development strategy.
